A Gathering of Carvers: Katsina Doll Marketplace

More than 100 Hopi katsina doll carvers will gather to show and sell their unique creations on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 11th Annual Katsina Doll Marketplace in Steele Auditorium at the Heard Museum.

More than 100 Hopi katsina doll carvers will gather in Steele
Auditorium at the Heard Museum to show and sell their unique
carvings in both traditional and contemporary styles. As a new
or experienced collector, attend the Marketplace to meet the best established and emerging carvers.

“Chili Runner” by Arthur Holmes, Jr. [left] is the featured doll for 2012. The doll will be raffled off at 3 p.m. on the day of the event, and the winner will also receive an exclusive event poster signed by all of the attending artists. This year's doll has a retail value of $5,000, and Holmes donated the piece to help support the Marketplace. The doll is carved entirely out of a single piece of cottonwood root, and the painting and carving detail is exceptional, showing why Holmes is among the most sought after katsina doll carvers of his generation.

Also, meet and have books signed by Hopi carver Neil David, Sr. (Neil David’s Hopi World and Kachinas – Spirit Beings of the Hopi) and author Dane Hart (Hopi Katsinas – A Key to Identification). Other authors have been invited and will be noted as they are confirmed. In addition, enjoy musical performances at 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You need not be present to win the drawing for the signature doll; tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10. Drawing tickets may be purchased at the Marketplace, at the Heard Museum Shop or by calling 602.252.8344, ext. 1.
