Please select only one tour time for your visit. No second tour is available.
9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m.

Tour Groups More than 30
Groups are divided in half and teachers can select two tours or one tour and a Bonus Tour. The first tour begins at 10:30 a.m.

When booking your tour, please provide:

  • Class size and grade level
  • School name, address and phone number
  • Name and home phone number of the accompanying teacher
  • Preferred date and time for a visit
  • Selected tour(s)

Before Your Visit
You will receive a tour confirmation form and a packet containing several classroom activities and name badges. Your Contact Guide will also call you to confirm your tour and the number of students in the group. Please let your guide know if you are emphasizing a particular theme in class. Be sure to inform the Contact Guide about any student's special needs so we can make your tour more enjoyable.

           For example:

  • Do any of the children have disabilities?
  • Are there children in your class who do not speak English?

Adult Chaperones
Chaperones are free with the group and are expected to assist with keeping discipline and ensuring the group stays together. Chaperones are also required to stay with the group at all times. Please note: An adult with a baby or small child is not considered a chaperone.

  • Grades 7 and below: One adult for every 5 to 7 students
  • Grades 8 and above: One adult for every 8 to 10 students

Tour Topics
All guided tours are 45 minutes. Groups of more than 30 students must arrange for two activities -- either two tours or one tour and a Bonus Tour.

  • For students K and pre-K we suggest:

The museum offers a 45-minute experience for very young visitors. The group sees several areas of the long-term exhibit HOME: Native People in the Southwest, including the Pueblo oven, Hopi katsina dolls and the Navajo hogan. The students then go into the museum's Story Room to handle some touch-its and/or hear a story.
  • For students K-6 we suggest:

Every Picture Tells a Story is an interactive exhibit that is ideal for younger students. Various areas and peoples of the United States and Canada are discussed. Artwork reflects the plants and animals of the region and how Native people use the environment. If your group is larger than 30 students, this tour is paired with either a Bonus Tour or the Outdoor Sculpture Tour, showing students the totem pole, Inuksuk and other sculpture installations throughout the museum's grounds. Bonus Tour available.

  • For students in grade 4 and up we suggest:

    1) HOME: Native People in the Southwest, the museum's signature exhibit highlighting pre-ancestral and present-day people of the greater Southwest.

    OR

    2) We Are! Arizona's First People emphasizes recent history and gives students an overview of all 21 federally recognized tribal communities in Arizona. Bonus Tour available.

  • For students in grade 7 and up we suggest:

Highlights of the Heard Museum takes students into every gallery (click here for a list of current exhibitions). Students learn about each exhibit's theme, and one or two artifacts in each gallery are highlighted. No Bonus Tour available.

Bonus Tours
Please note: A maximum of 30 students can be accommodated at one time. Groups of more than 30 will be divided in half, with half the group touring and half the group working on the Bonus Tour activity. Then, each group will switch areas. A materials fee of $1 per student is charged.

If you tour HOME or We Are! Arizona's First People , choose one of the following activities:

  • Use a pump drill and create a bracelet
  • Make a treasure box based on Navajo rug designs
  • Make a jacla-style necklace

If you tour Every Picture Tells a Story, choose one of the following activities:

  • Make a necklace with pony beads and ornaments
  • Make a magnet and a paper "salmon" necklace
