The Heard Museum's collections began with Dwight and Maie Heard and have grown from about 3,000 objects in 1951 to more than 39,000 objects today. Much of the collection's growth is thanks to individual donors, who have given from their own collections or have provided funding for purchases of significant artwork.
The Billie Jane Baguley Library and Archives also is the repository for
a wide range of materials that document American Indian history, culture and art. The archive also include other indigenous peoples of the Americas, although the strength of the collection is from the Southwest. The majority of the holdings date from the mid-19th century to present.
