School Group Tours
It is never too early to learn about Native cultures and art, and the Heard has developed special programs and exhibits that both entertain and enlighten students of all ages. Hands-on exhibits and "bonus tours" which add classroom instruction to a guided tour of the museum are just some of the educational opportunities we provide.
Adult Group Tour Options
Experience the Heard Museum as a group with one of the many tour options listed below. Add lunch to your visit! All adult group tours have the option of adding a boxed lunch from
The Café at the Heard Museum
to their tour package. Meals must be ordered one week prior to your arrival date.
HOME: Native People in the Southwest Tour
HOME: Native People in the Southwest is the Heard Museum's signature exhibition.
Artist voices combine with more than 2,000 of the museum's finest pieces to tell the stories -- past and present -- of Southwestern Native people. See a spectacular display of Hopi katsina dolls from the Sen. Barry Goldwater and Fred Harvey Company collections. A Navajo hogan, four video presentations, interactive sound and video stations, a media room and frequent artist demonstrations make this a must-see.
Highlights of the Heard Tour
Get the most out of your visit to the Heard with this tour that takes your group through each exhibit gallery in the museum. This is an excellent tour for first-time visitors who would like to get acquainted with our collection before returning for a specialized tour, or for returning visitors who do not want to miss our regularly changing exhibits.
Sculpture Garden Tour
The grounds of the Heard Museum contain works made by a range of Native American sculptors, like Allan Houser, Bob Houzous, Doug Hyde, and Nora Naranjo Morse. The Nichols Sculpture Garden, located south of the HOME exhibit, is our 11th gallery, currently featuring the exhibit Retha Walden Gambaro: Attitudes of Prayer. Enjoy the warm Arizona climate and the elegant courtyards of the museum while learning about these world-class pieces.
Native Cultures & People Tour
The Heard Museum and the Desert Botanical Garden have come together to present a wonderfully insightful Southwest experience, acquainting your group with the diversity of the Sonoran Desert and the resourcefulness of its Native Peoples. This combination tour includes a visit to both locations and lunch at the Desert Botanical Garden’s lovely outdoor Patio Café. Guided tours are available at both locations but transportation is not included.
To book this tour, please contact Emily Koeckhoven at the Desert Botanical Garden at 480.481.8104.
Las Guias Specialized Tours
With prior arrangement, custom tours can be designed according to any special interests your tour group may have. Specially trained Las Guias guides can focus on new exhibitions or areas such as jewelry, pottery, basketry, katsina dolls, textiles and contemporary art. These tours can include talks, object demonstrations, and special tours within exhibit galleries and the Shop. Please be sure to book well in advance as certain guides must be available for each area of interest.
Self-Guided Tour
A self-guided approach is perfect for the group that might not need the direction or focused attention of a Las Guias guide, possibly due to group size or time restrictions. Booking a self-guided tour in advance will ensure that you are entitled to the group tour discount. Visitors may also choose to conclude their tour with a trip to the Heard Museum Shop to view a wide range of artwork and jewelry by today’s top American Indian artists.
Group Lunches
We all know that it is difficult to concentrate or enjoy yourself on an empty stomach, so we have made it possible for you to order Boxed Lunches for your group. Make sure to request a menu and pricing sheet when booking your tour. Menu selections must be made and returned to the booking coordinator at least one week prior to arrival.
